Melbourne Cup 2007 - Comment & Analysis

When interviewed immediately after, Michael Rodd stated simply “I’ve won the Melbourne Cup!” He was right.

Efficient was produced perfectly to get up in the final strides, taking the race from Purple Moon, who also ran an excellent race.

Arguably, Purple Moon went slightly too early, but hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the best horse won on the day.

Aiden O’Brien will be pleased with the performance of Mahler. The horse stayed the trip really well, but just did not have enough pace left to take the first two out of the equation. Obviously, their game-plan was to turn it into a real test of stamina, by making the pace, and they did this really well - the average speed for this year’s Melbourne Cup was 56Kph.

In the end, none could live with Efficient’s finishing kick, as he was produced late to take the Melbourne Cup, landing his connection’s long term plan in fine style.

A really super race.

Further to the above, here are some quotes from the UK’s Racing Post:

Jockey Rodd, who was landing the biggest success of his career, said: “I just won the Melbourne Cup - I can’t believe it!

“To do it on this little horse for Mr Williams (owner), who gave me so much when I first came down here, it’s just unbelievable.”
Rodd continued: “Lloyd Williams brought me down here 12 months ago and put enough trust in me to put me on Efficient in the (Victoria) Derby and put me in a position to be back on the horse a year later to win the Melbourne Cup - it’s just an absolute dream.

“There’s no one who deserves this more than Lloyd. It’s just a dream.”

Rogerson added: “I’m just so proud to be part of the Williams group.

“To the other partners in this horse, Lloyd owns three-quarters of him, it’s been a great uphill ride.”

Williams, who was watching at home, said; “(We’re) absolutely delightedhere, we’ve got a great team out there who put this together.

“I don’t know how I’d handle it out there, but I just congratulate all my team - we’ve got 70 odd people that work in our stable and they’ve just done a remarkable job.

“Michael rode this horse absolutely to plan. We wanted him to get him to the outside as we realised that he only travels when he is going round horses and, when he leaned out, Michael did a wonderful job.

“I was really thrilled for Michael. The Derby and then the Melbourne Cup I think, so he’s done a great job.”

Of the decision to take off the blinkers that Efficient sported on his last start in the Cox Plate ,Williams added: “I decided that last Sunday. I didn’t like the fact that I saw Lad of the Manor laying in on him (in the Cox Plate) and he was wanting to get in on him.

“He didn’t know where he was, so I wanted to take the blinkers off him.

“I thought I needed to wake him this week so we put him over the hurdles on Monday and then I gave him a very hard gallop on Tuesday morning to wake him up.

“We put him back over the sticks again on Wednesday and then another gallop on Thursday.”
