It's taken a while but a Grand Prix in our region to match European and US standards played out yesterday in Hawkes Bay, at the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show. Thirty riders contested the Olympic Cup and it was the Australians who took out the top 3 places. The Leopoldo Palacious course was set at maximum and tested all competitors in the richest Grand Prix in Australasia, with over $400,000 in prizemoney. Peter McMahon and the super KS Genoa jumped the only double clean round with Wendy Shaeffer and Julia Hargraves taking equal second. Check out the video of Peters final round here. It seems almost every week now we are writing about Edwina Alexander winning another top class international Grand Prix. Well she's done it again this week, but they don't get much bigger, the World Cup Qualifier at Olympia. Riding her current star mount, Itot Du Chateau, she jumped the only double clear round to beat crowd favourite John Whitaker on Casino. Edwina must now be a very short favourite to win the World Cup Final in Las Vegas, and also the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010.

Edwina Alexander climbs rankings: Wins CSI*5 in Brussels

Australian Edwina Alexander continues to impress on the world jumping stage, winning the Brussels CSI*5 Grand Prix over the weekend. On her Olympic mount Itot du Chateau, she clinched the win by beating German pair Marco Kutcher on Cash, and Marcus Ehning on Sandron Boy. She had a great show by also placing second in the Rolex IJRC Top Ten, and second in a 1.55m class on her new mount Late Nite. It's no mean feat by any Australian to be competing, yet alone winning at this level, and Edwina is fast becoming a legend, if not already, of the sport. Plenty more to come we're sure. BTW, Edwina won an Audi A6 for her efforts. Here are the videos of her rides at Brussels: Rolex Top 10 Round 2 Rolex Top 10 Round 1 Audi GP Round 2 Audi GP Round 1

2008 Sale FEI World Cup Results

What many of us love about the sport of equestrian is that you can continue not only to ride, but also be competitive, and indeed win at the highest level, well into your twilight years. It seems 61 year old Laurie Lever & Ashleigh Drossel Dan is doing just that almost every weekend.  Yet again he out classed less experienced but no less talented combinations on a rain effected arena to win Sale World Cup Round of the 2008 Australian League.  Adelaide International Eventing **** winner Chris Burton tried hard to spoil the party though in his very first World Cup, on the stunning paint stallion Copabella Visage placing second, with local and crowd favourite Gavin Chester on Warlord II in third place. 1st: Laurie Lever 7 Ashleigh Drossel Dan 2nd Chris Burton & Coppabella Visage 3rd: Gavin Chester & Warlord II                                                      Photo Courtesty of HorseDeals.com.au        Full results here [1] [1] http://www.horsedeals.com.au/downloads/event_5813/Sale%2008.pdf

The Express Eventing took place today at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and saw Oliver Townend lift the first prize with his grey Flint Curtis - netting him the winners prize money of £100,000! [caption id="attachment_767" align="alignright" width="110" caption="Oliver Townend and Flint curtis"] [1][/caption] The results were as follows: Oliver Townend & Flint Curtis Lucy Wiegersma & Shaabrak William Fox-Pitt & Ballincoola Clayton Fredericks & Ben Along Time Vittoria Panizzon & Rock Model Caroline Powell & Lenamore There was sadness at the event too, as Mary King lost Call Again Cavalier, who performed so well for her at this summer's Olympics. The horse was put down following a fall at the wide narrow corner fence named "The Duck Houses". Only six competitors completed the full event. The video above shows Oliver's Cross Country round. Laurie Lever wins Prydes World Cup Qualifier at Equitana 2008

Beijing hero Laurie Lever and Ashleigh Drossel Dan yesterday won the Equitana round of the world cup qualifier in Melbourne. After having four faults in round 1, Laurie and the big grey pulled out all stops to jump two great clear rounds and take the title from Chris Chugg on Vivant, and Adam Mellers on Animate. The imported horses are really starting to make their mark on Australian Showjumping, and it's only a matter of time before we see some amazing results on the international scene.
