The Very Lucky Ponies of the Victorian Bushfires

Info

Published: February 24, 2009 | By Jono

The Victorian bushfires have pulled at the heartstrings of certainly everyone in Australia and around the world and while the devastation has caused massive heartbreak for those that have lost loved ones, it's easy to forget that there are estimates that over 1 million animals were lost, including native species, pets, and livestock. Support from around the country to treat the injured has been massive, with vets donating their time and leaving their practices in other states to travel to Victoria to help out. Amongst it all there are some amazing stories emerging of how animals, and in particular, horses, managed to escape the fires. Horses have been found in areas where everything else around them perished. Horses have an inate instinct to jump through flames to get to burnt ground, and many have been found with singed faces and legs, but no major injuries. Another story is how a horse saved it's owners life by pushing him into a dam. The horse also survived. Check out some of these videos, and meet the people who are ground zero.

Leconte and Marcus Ehning – Well Done Matt Williams

Leconte and Marcus Ehning – Well Done Matt Williams

For those of you who don't know, Matt Williams Olympic ride Leconte 6, is now being ridden by Germany's Marcus Ehning.  After the Olympics Matt received a fantastic offer to ride in the UK, which meant he could not take Leconte with him. Marcus Ehning has the ride and judging by this video, there are some special things to come. It's a great feather in Matts cap that the horse looks so rideable and scopey, as apparetly, Leconte was very difficult when  Matt first took the ride. The horse looks anything but now, and shows what a great job Matt did. Check it out, it's poetry in motion. Rumour has it Marcus may even think of taking it to the World Cup Final. Star Racehorse, Inglis Drever, Retires

Info

Published: January 22, 2009 | By Linda

Tagged as: ,,

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="244" caption="Inglis Drever in action"][/caption] A HISTORY-MAKING staying hurdler, Inglis Drever, has been retired at the age of 10, even though he had recovered from the hock injury suffered at Newbury last November, writes Jo Scott, freelance journalist and Darlington and Stockton Times racing correspondent. Trained at Billy Row, County Durham, by Howard Johnson, and owned by retired Sage computer man Graham Wylie and his wife Andrea, Inglis Drever made history at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2008 as he became the first horse to win the World Hurdle three times. He also won 17 of his 35 starts and nearly £800,000 in prize money. After six weeks' box rest, and some swimming, the stable star was entered in the World Hurdle again before the deadline for the 2009 event, but also before vets could scan the leg again. This they did about a fortnight ago, and the hurdler was pronounced fit to start light work again. Howard Johnson said: "I got him shod back up so I could put him on the roads again, but it was clear he was not enjoying it. He wouldn't let Ginni (Wright, his loving groom) get on him. It was clear he has had enough." Owner Graham Wylie said: "We decided on Saturday that he wasn't really interested in his racing any more. We always knew that he would tell us when he wanted to be retired. That day has now come. "At the end of the day, he has won three World Hurdles and has been one of the greatest horses to have been around.  Probably apart from Lord Transcend, Inglis Drever was the horse who got me seriously interested in racing. "People might think Cheltenham gave me my favourite memories of him, but it was actually a day at Haydock in 2005 when both he and Lord Transcend won. "He instilled in me such a passion for the sport. "Howard says to let him chill out for a bit and he'll have a box next to one of our broodmares. I'm sure he'll have a long and happy retirement." Graham Lee, who won the 2005 World Hurdle, said: "He was a great little horse and was a joy to ride." Paddy Brennan, who partnered the 2007 win, said: "He was definitely the best hurdler I have ridden." Denis O'Regan, the 2008 winning rider, said: "He was a fantastic horse and will forever live in my memory." It is at Cheltenham on Saturday, January 24, that stablemate Tidal Bay will contest the Letherby & Christopher Chase, in a bid to decide which of four races at the Festival next March will be on his agenda. Graham Wylie said: "He is entered in four races at Cheltenham and I'm sure Howard doesn't yet know which is the best one for him. "If he comes down in trip, he meets Master Minded. If he goes up in trip, he meets Denman and Kauto Star. Saturday will tell us a bit more about the horse."

Profile of a Racehorse Trainer: Marjorie Fife

Profile of a Racehorse Trainer: Marjorie Fife

Info

Tagged as: ,,,,

Stillington trainer Marjorie Fife, pictured here with stable star Mandalay King, is looking forward to this year with confidence, having now trained both Flat and jumps winners. She is based next door to the yard now in the charge of Ruth Carr and formerly that of her grandfather David Chapman, whom Marjorie used to help. She used to do eventing and point-to-pointing and prepped racehorses who were soured or sick of the job, until owners pressed her to take out her own licence to train, which she did in 2007. Marjorie had one winner in her first year - Splendidio, who came from Mick Channon's and who landed a five furlong Folkestone race for Marjorie. She then went on to take three on the level last term, all thanks to Mandalay King. [caption id="attachment_849" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Manadalay King"] [1][/caption] He joined the Fifes from Jane Chapple-Hyam's Newmarket yard, and Marjorie told the D&S Times: "The pint sized little pony came as a colt and had his own ideas on how to do things! He's got a heart like a lion, but is not an easy horse to do at the races as he can't be left on his own in a box as he flies round and round getting himself wound up into black sweats. "He has to be saddled on the move in the stable yard before he runs as he a little terror in a confined space, throwing himself on the floor and standing on his back legs. But as soon as the saddle is on and jockey on board, he's an absolute star settling into the job in hand." He won three times last summer for his new trainer, all ridden by apprentices: at Redcar under Kelly Harrison, at Hamilton under Michael Dods' lad John Cavanagh and at Carlisle under Patrick Haslam's claimer, Paddy Donaghy. Marjorie's other promising horse which she tipped for readers to follow is Lawgiver, who was short-headed but awarded the race at Catterick a month ago today (CORRECT 16th). He also has his own ideas about racing, she told us, but he gave jockey Kyle James his first winner over jumps. Marjorie's other jumps wins came from Physical Force and Munnawesh. With a string of just six horses, she is looking for more owners, who will find her fees very reasonable at £160 p/week: anyone interested can contact her on 0789 0075217.
