Are you a Trainer or a Rider?

Are you a Trainer or a Rider?

[1] As a full time equestrian trainer and coach, I'm constantly amazed at the perception by many riders, especially young riders, who seem to assume that their horse(s) just knows what to do.  Many riders expect that if they pull on the reins, the horse should stop, or if they squeeze with their legs the horse should go forward.  What many fail to understand is that the horse learns these aids from its trainer or rider. Consequently, if the training is incorrect, the horse can also learn incorrectly. Take for example a young thouroughbred off the track. It has been taught to run very fast from a two year old, many times with a whip, and also with the jockey holding on quite tightly to the horses head via the bit. So at a very early stage in the horses life, it is being taught to go fast, while at the same time having great pressure applied to the mouth.  If subsequently the horse is not fast enough, or not deemed good enough for a race horse, it is then either disgarded to a farm, performance horse discipline, or worse, sent to the abbatoir. In Australia, many young TB's are bought cheaply by equestrians, with the aim of re-training to become dressage, showjumping, eventing, pony club, or pleasure horses.   Many work out just fine, but many also don't. If the new owner is just a rider, they quite quickly may become very frustrated that when they try and "ride" their new horse, things don't work as planned. The horse may buck, run, not stop, not turn, and generally be dangerous.  A "trainer" however, understands that many young racehorses have learnt that if the rider touches them with a whip or leg they run fast, and many will even go faster, as pressure is applied to the mouth via the bit. Some may not respond at all to the leg, as they've never been taught that leg means go forward. So a good trainer will begin by simply teaching the horse stop, go, turn, straightness, quitely and safely, and expect that the horse has to learn, not be "made" to understand the new aids. Along the way there certainly might be some obstacles and frustration, but the aim is to teach, not to "make" the new horse learn the new aids. Lets all become better tainers. Horses are not machines, they learn just as any other beings do.  Many of the top equestrians in all disciplines are not just great riders, they also are great trainers.  If we all aim to be better trainers, the horses life, and ours, will become much more rewarding and enjoyable. New Look Allied Equine Takes Off!

New Look Allied Equine Takes Off!

[1] Please forgive us, here at Allied Equine, this one inward-looking piece - a newsletter of sorts - for those countless thousands of you who have been repeatedly coming back to our site day after day, week after week. Here at Allied Equine, we've been pretty lackadaisical about keeping this website up-to-speed. For good reason. When we originally set this site up, Jono Farrington, the primary writer, had not moved into his new equestrian property. As any who have experienced this distinct pleasure will surely attest, setting up shop in a new place takes a little time and energy, and leaves little for things like resting, let alone writing and updating an equestrian sport blog. But that is not to say we have been inactive - far from it! However, the classifieds that we set up back in 2007 proved to be fairly successful - so we'll be bringing them back in a different section of the website ASAP (within the next 48 hours to be precise) to unclutter this news, blog and videos area, and allow the classifieds to grow into a bigger, better and more scam-free purpose built area. Also, we're removing the evnt listings sections as that has now migrated to our sister website, IKnowWhereItsAt.com, which lists all sorts of events and activities - allowing us, here at Allied Equine to further focus on what we are: The Equestrian Sports Blog. [2] The name says it all really - this is a blog website (so that means leave comments, argue with us, hooray and boo as loud as you like!) which is focused on Equestrian Sport. We will focus on jumping - read show jumping and cross country (eventing) as the blog's main writers are actively participating in high quality jumping events around the world, however, there is always a place for all equestrian disciplines: so if you feel your sport is not receiving sufficient coverage, then you can do something about it: contact us and get involved, in some small way. Google already has Allied Equine as the number one Equestrian Sport Blog [3], so that's what we want to make it. Simple. Join Us! In the mean time, subscribe to the new Feedburner feeds, bookmark these pages, and tell your horse-mad friends to watch this space. You'll probably have noticed the new look logo at the top of the page. This is just the beginning. UK Equestrian Events Now Managed By I Know Where Its At!

Info

Published: April 16, 2009 | By Linda

We've been waiting for this day for some time now, and its great that we can make an announcement now! UK equestrian events [1] are now handled entirely by our sister site, I Know Where Its At! [2] (IKnowWhereItsAt.com) where those organising such events can add their events, and all of us planning to attend one or all of them can find them quickly, rate and comment on loads of forthcoming equestrian events [3] quickly and easily all in one place. The reason we're so excited about this is that it means a little less work for us here at Allied Equine adding and managing equestrian events [3], while we still get to tell you about them all here - using the sidebar which communicates directly with IKnowWhereItsAt! and pulls in the latest equestrian events [3] added over there - that way you can keep ahead of forthcoming events here too! If you are organising (or know someone who is organising) an equestrian event which takes place in the United Kingdom, whether it be a point-to-point, a show jumping event, cross country, 3 day event or a horse racing meeting, be sure to get it added to IKnowWhereItsAt! [6] - click here to start the submission process [7]. See you at the next horse show!
